N.L. Berg, the SEM Maven and founder of eMarketing Boutique, has over 10 years of online marketing experience and has been responsible for the strategy and implementation of major marketing and public relations campaigns for her clients. The following case studies represent a small sampling of the types of profitable marketing efforts she has spearheaded over the years.

Profitable Press Releases
Because the client was interested in a limited marketing initiative, it was important to introduce the client's brand via a series of press releases in a manner that generated interest in both journalists and consumers. We needed to create a buzz about their unique product offerings within the limitations of both a tight budget and narrow range of content due to legal restrictions.

During the five weeks after appearing online, our first press release was viewed 150,614 times and was picked up by 1099 media outlets. Four print newspapers published articles about our client's products after seeing the release. Overall, sales on the client's website were up more than 225% in the four week period following the release's appearance online and sales for the product mentioned in the press release shot up by 480%.

Profitable Confirmation Pages
The client wanted to find a smart way to introduce his network of e-commerce sites to current purchasers that were visiting his most popular website. Therefore we decided to make the sales confirmation page (the page customers saw after they made a purchase) do double duty. We added content to the confirmation page that included interesting descriptions of his other websites and included an online coupon with a unique code so that we could track orders. As predicted, the new confirmation page was successful at introducing current customers to the client's complimentary websites as customers used the coupons at his other stores bringing in additional revenue.

Profitable Personalized Coupons
The client needed a new way to encourage first-time customers to return to his online store. His previous postcard campaign with a "return coupon" just wasn't working. The client admitted that repeat purchases were down significantly. Therefore we came up with the idea of creating a personalized coupon code based on the name of the customer. The code would be computer generated and would be assigned to every new customer. Because the coupon code would be based on the customer's name it would be easy to remember and we felt strongly that it would generate loyalty.

The results? The percentage of repeat customers, compared to the previous year, was over 11% and generated revenue in excess of $300,000.

Profitable PPC Campaigns
The challenge here was to fine-tune the client's current PPC campaign to bring in more leads at a cost efficient price. The current PPC campaign had a number of deficiencies. They were letting keywords accumulate $50 worth of clicks without seeing any results. They didn't have negative keywords in their PPC campaign which meant they were receiving inquiries for products they didn't sell which was wasting advertising money and customer service time. And finally, the "request for quote" form that visitors were supposed to fill out was hidden.

Therefore we had the website designer make changes to their website including enlarging their contact information, putting up a tagline and making the link to their form much more visible throughout the site.

After the first month of working on their campaign, we brought the average CPC (cost per click) down to $2.95 from the previous month's $3.76. We brought the conversion rate up to 17.86% from the previous month's 7.21%. And most importantly, due to the website changes we had instigated, we brought the CPA (cost per acquisition) down to $16.51 from the previous month's $52.20!
